âA little space, mate,â I hissed at the shifter walking inches from me. His broad shoulders knocked against my side as he stormed off with a huff.
Sensitive bunch.
My head swiveled to check on Savannah, who lingered a good distance behind me while we marched down the laden path leading to the witch cemetery. She had been keeping away from me ever since that bloody incident at her farm, and it made my blood boil. I felt like a sodding fool for what happened. Losing control of myself that way was not called for, and I hated that I made her uncomfortable. Seriously, mate. Who pounces on women that way? Itâs morbid.
I glanced her way again and Savannah looked down at her feet when our eyes met.
Brilliant.
Choosing not to dwell on the absolute mess I created between us, I inspected the group. Billie insisted we keep the numbers to a minimum so as not to attract unwanted attention. Even went as far as asking Peyton and Morgan to keep the hunters occupied while we visited the cemetery. I could tell in her voice she was as frustrated with those wankers as me and almost volunteered myself to go instead. One look at Savannah had me reconsidering.
The cemetery was harmless, but something still didnât sit right with me. For some reason, I didnât feel comfortable letting her come here alone. Of course, she wasnât alone at all, was she? One glance at the bloody wolves accompanying us had my pulse drumming under my skin.
Sheâs not yours to protect, you tosser.
Long fingers brushed my arm, and I jumped.
âYou good there?â Savannah asked. When I looked at her hand, she let it drop to her side. Marvelous.
I scanned the area again, defeated. âAll good, princess. Thought I heard something.â
She rolled her eyes and stomped away, leaving me alone on the path. As I hurried to catch up, I tried not to think about the way her hips swayed when she walked. Side to side, like a sodding pendulum hypnotizing my traitorous eyes.
I shook the thought off and pumped my legs to run faster. When I reached the rest, I skidded to a stop.
Before us, tombstones sprouted from the ground as the cemetery came into view. My stomach growled and I covered the sound with a forceful cough, catching a stone-cold glare from Savannah. Cheeks heating, I rubbed the back of my neck, looking to Billie and the other witch she brought along. I couldnât remember her name. Something with a âVâ maybe?
âSo, where do we look?â I asked. âYou feel anything yet?â
Billie shrugged. âNot a thing.â
âWhat about the catacombs?â one wolf asked. I vaguely recalled him from the house when his name popped into my mind. Griffin.
âI donât know,â Billie whispered into the air. âI felt nothing there last time. At least not anything like what my mom described.â
Beside Billie, the second witch pointed to the far end of the cemetery. âWhat about over there?â
âGraves?â River asked.
Billieâs eyes met mine, and I sensed she didnât agree with them.
